Responsibilities for this Position

GDMS has an immediate opening for a Senior Principal Systems Engineer to support a spaceborne all-sky transit survey mission.  This position provides an opportunity to discover thousands of exoplanets in orbit around the brightest stars in the sky and build on the successful KEPLER work.  GDMS employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out world-class scientific work leading to ground breaking discoveries.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

-Supports science data processing activities leading to data validation

-Leads and develops material for working groups to finalize the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) science commissioning plan

-Performs as a National Aeronautics and Space Administration liaison for the TESS Instrument team during operations

-Leads the verification and validation of the Mission ConOps during integration, test and on-orbit commissioning

-Leads the planning for all readiness activities and resources in support of a Science Orbit in the Life

-Leads and contribute to documenting and planning any additional (as needed) instrument tests

-Leads scientific discussion for development of an Integrated Mission Time-line

-Synthesizes solutions to meet customer expectations and technical performance while staying within schedule and cost constraints

-Leads technical planning, cost and risk analyses, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for subsystems and system elements

-Leads detailed technical analyses for a system, subsystem or system elements to include: concept, requirements, design, fabrication,  

 integration, test, acceptance, delivery, installation, training, operation, maintenance and disposal

-Identifies, analyzes and resolves system design weaknesses.
-Travel may be required
-Assignments may be self-initiated
-Works on unusually complex problems and provides creative and innovative solutions

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
-Demonstrated use, understanding and tailoring of systems engineering concepts, principles, and theories
-Frequently contributes to the development of innovative principles and ideas
-Major contributor to the achievement of business objectives
-Demonstrated proficiency with requirements management, system design & system modeling tools
-Recognizes various architectural patterns, applies them appropriately, understands strengths/weaknesses within those architectures and

 develops architectural variations as necessary
-Familiar with Enterprise Architecture Frameworks
-Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
-Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills
-Creative thinker
-Ability to multi-task
-Demonstrated skills in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
-Demonstrated ability to clearly report information relevant to sound systems engineering design
-Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply project leadership principles including Schedule Performance Index/Cost Performance Index, Earned Value, Cost Account Management

 (CAM), and Statistical Process Controls

PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:

-PhD Astrophysics

-Experience with NASA and Goddard Space Flight Center policies and procedures

-Experience as an instrument liaison

-Experience during instrument commissioning phase

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship is required.  A NACI is required.
