Basic Qualifications

The EMI/EMC Engineer position requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent related field, or the equivalent experience is required.   In addition, 10+ years of relevant experience is required; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. 



Responsibilities for this Position

GDMS is seeking an experienced EMI/EMC Engineer with a strong background in Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) including Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility (EMI/EMC), High Altitude Electomagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and Lightning. Experience with TEMPEST and RED/BLACK design is also desirable.  As a senior member of the EMI/EMC team the candidate will perform design, analysis, and testing tasks for a wide variety of tactical communications systems and ruggedized communications and computer equipment for military applications. Products range from tabletop subsystems to large complex vehicular systems.


EMI/EMC tasks include:

  • Review of customer requirement specifications for E3 requirements for new product proposals
  • Prepare EMC Control Plans and participate in design reviews to provide detailed design guidance on filters, shielding of ventilation, gaskets, transient protection needs, cable shielding, etc.
  • Provide cost effective E3 design guidance needed for compliance with military EMI, electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) and lightning standards
  • Determine the need for transient protection for electromagnetic threats including HEMP, Lightning, MIL-STD-1275, Directed Energy weapons, etc.
  • Use Electromagnetic modeling tools such as FEKO, CTS, etc. in support of EMI/HEMP/Lightning design
  • Perform EMI testing and troubleshoot EMI problems as needed and recommend cost effective solutions with minimal design impact.
  • Prepare EMI and HEMP test plans and reports
  • Prepare HEMP and Lightning analysis for individual equipment and systems using numerical modeling tools (FEKO, FDTD, etc)
  • Work well under consultative direction on predetermined long range objectives

Additional required skills include: 

  • Ability to provide detailed EMI design guidance
  • Perform testing in accordance with MIL-STD-461
  • Modeling with FEKO, CTS, or similar simulation software
  • Familiarity with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, EMI receivers, Spectrum and Network analyzers, etc.
  • Familiarity with test equipment control programs such as TILE and/or HPVEE

Preferred skills

  • Modeling with FEKO, CTS, or similar simulation software
  • Ability to provide detailed HEMP/Lightning design guidance
  • Familiarity with testing to DO-160 and/or MIL-STD-464

Department of Defense Secret clearance preferred at time of hire.  The selected candidate must be able to obtain a Secret and Top Secret within a reasonable amount of time from date of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
