Basic Qualifications

Background with a demonstrated proficiency in documenting mechanical design is required – MS Office is the current program standard.


Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.


Clearance Requirements:

Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is REQUIRED at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

GDMS has an immediate opening for an Advanced Technical Writer to fill an opening on our operations team.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  GDMS employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.


The Advanced Technical Writer will provide technical writing support for program tasking and deliverables, working independently and/or with a team of project engineers and technicians, as specific tasking dictates. Scope of tasking will include preparation of installation and assembly procedures for mechanical and electromechanical systems, utility sub-system components, and structural systems. Work involves hands-on development (design, prototyping, and testing) of one-of-a-kind solutions, often in support of quick response capability (QRC) programs. Support on Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) may also include input for technical reports and design milestone reviews, scheduling and planning duties, and other special assignments on a diverse range of technical tasking. The role requires working with the program team and sub-contractors in addition to direct interface with customer representatives.



  • Prior experience requiring direct technical interface with engineering and operations staff
  • Hands-on construction experience and interest/ability to work with engineers and technicians to fabricate physical proof-of-concept mock-ups in a shop/highbay environment is a plus



  • Creates, develops, plans, writes and edits complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication
    • Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation
    • Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users
    • Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals
    • Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements
    • Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards
  • Edits, proofreads, organizes, and rewrites all volumes of technical product guides
  • Acts as the primary technical editor on client deliverables as requested
  • Implements editorial and document governance standards for quality and style; ensures all assigned deliverables meet these standards
  • Manages final editing process
  • Determines the scope and timeline of new documentation projects in order to plan projects
  • Leads and coordinates project plans including determining resources required
  • Ensures projects and products meet deadlines, quality standards and client needs
  • Interviews programmers, engineers, developers, and other technical personnel to gather complex technical information for use in documentation
  • Writes, organizes, enters and compiles more complex online help files to support end users
  • Ensures documents and materials adhere to established standards and guidelines; recommends revisions to standards and guidelines
  • Provides feedback, input and helps craft documentation to assist other employees
  • Establishes and creates style guidelines and standards for texts and illustrations to meet business needs
  • Provides leadership and work guidance to less experienced personnel
  • Often interacts with:
    • Customers and users to validate feedback and incorporate changes as required
    • Internal customers
    • Program leads
    • External customers, suppliers and subcontractors
    • Department personnel
    • Consultants
    • Members of Engineering and Technical Staff
  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors
  • Normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work, general instructions on new assignments
  • Works with little to no instruction on day-to-day work and under some guidance of senior staff on new or high level assignments
  • Expert use and application of standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques
  • Provides resolutions to an assortment of problems of highly complex scope
  • Uses judgment within defined practices and procedures
  • Subject matter expert (SME) in one discipline/field and developing working knowledge in adjacent disciplines/fields
  • May require experience with marking and labeling classified documentation/designs
  • Networks with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise
  • Security clearance is required

  • Proficient written and oral communications skills and problem-solving/decision-making skills
  • Proficient analytical skills, attention to detail, and an ability to perform in a team-based, fast-paced, quick reaction environment
  • Participates in determining objectives of assignment
  • Plans schedules and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives
  • Represents organization on specific projects as required
  • Works under only very general supervision
  • Provides work direction to other employees as required
  • Must be schedule driven
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Proficient knowledge of DoD guidelines and standards
  • Must have a compatible technical background/experience
