  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience is required plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus 3 years of relevant experience. 



    • System Administrator with at least five (5) years of prior system administration experience
    • Experience with
      • Linux and Unix operating systems and provisioning applications
      • Windows Server operating system environments
      • Windows Server / Active Directory Admin
      • Big Data environments such as Hadoop and Acumulo and provisioning software
      • VMWare hypervisor environment and provisioning software
      • Administer storage platforms which provision the environment
    • (Preferred) Multiple System certifications in provisioning technologies such as Redhat Certified, Linux+, Security+
    • Implementation of Government system design; and extensive knowledge and experience in the implementation of information technology equipment and services
    • Extensive knowledge of methodology, federal information system policies (e.g. NIST 800.53, FISMA, Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG), configuration management)

    This position requires an active Top Secret security clearance upon hire and must meet SCI eligibility. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Big Data System Administrator.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.



    • Responsible for managing the functionality and efficiency of a group of computers running on one or more operating systems
    • Maintains the integrity and security of servers and systems
    • Serves as a front line interface to users with technical issues
    • Makes recommendations for hardware and software purchases
    • Interacts with third-party technology vendors and internal database staff
    • Conducts systems analysis and development to keep systems current with changing technologies
    • Duties may include installing new software, troubleshooting, granting permissions to applications and training users 
    • Responsible for the day-to-day support of server services
    • Performs Server administration for Server Operating Systems
    • Performs administration of physical and virtualized servers
    • Responsible for the configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of physical and virtual hardware
    • Configures, maintains and troubleshoots network related interfaces on servers
    • Performs OS and vendor software patching on servers
    • Monitors Physical and Virtual Servers performance using monitoring tools 
    • Performs, maintains, troubleshoots and does analysis of alerts on Servers
    • Performs administration of physical and virtualized servers using industry standard technologies 
    • Performs administration of servers in lab environments that are physical and virtualized using industry standard technologies
    • Administer Linux and Unix operating systems and provisioning applications
    • Administer Microsoft Windows environments
    • Administer Windows Server / Active Directory Admin
    • Administer Big Data environments such as Hadoop and Acumulo and provisioning software
    • Administer VMWare Hypervisor environment and provisioning software
    • Administer storage platforms which provision the environment
    • Evaluate system problems of workflow, organization, and planning and develops appropriate corrective action
    • Perform quality control of processes and products produced
    • Assist in the formulation of technical strategies and processes for administered systems
    • Write, interpret and analyze technical documentation related to system administration
    • Provide consulting support, if requested, to working groups (both internal and external) and committees as substantive authority in subject area


    • Broad application of principles, theories, and concepts in applicable discipline, plus working knowledge of other related fields
    • Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems

    • Analytical and problem solving skills
    • Troubleshooting skills within the Servers OS as well as both networking and storage technologies
