  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.

     

    CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
    Department of Defense Top Secret security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

     

    Responsibilities for this Position

     

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Sr. Network Design Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

     

    The individual in this position will work in a highly collaborative environment with peers, associate contractors, military personnel and senior government personnel supporting a classified program at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, WA. The selected candidate will join a team of experienced GDMS engineers providing System Administration, Electrical/Optical/Mechanical Engineering and Technical Support of the end product. This individual must have Electrical and Mechanical Engineering experience and/or experience as a System Administrator in a Microsoft Windows environment. They will assist with the repair and upgrade activities on a classified system. This will include software updates, hardware refreshes/modifications, and electrical and fiber testing. The person in this position will also coordinate with all associated contractors and government officials.

     

    Additionally, the individual will have either been a Certified Navy Instructor or have experience in personnel training processes and or techniques. They may function as an instructor and/or training facilitator, to include working with the management team to schedule training and training exercises. They may develop and/or modify course content, learning objectives and prepare course lesson plans and student manuals. Evaluates training materials and procedures and/or recommends revisions to these materials and procedures in order to insure that training courses remain current and compliant with prevailing standards and mission objectives.  

     

     

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

    • Provides technical analysis in data network planning, engineering, and design 
    • Provides analysis for implementation techniques and tools for the most efficient solution to network problems
    • Conducts testing of network systems
    • Maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, hubs, bridges and gateways, etc. 
    • Coordinates third party maintenance for network equipment and troubleshoots problems with department users and department network administrators 
    • May develop uniform operation procedures
    • Evaluates and reports on new network technologies to enhance capabilities of the network
    • Supports/assists in the design and planning of network systems 


    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Considerable proficiency and able to perform all responsibilities associated with the position 
    • Develops and provides innovative and creative solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity, using established precedent and policies 
    • Contributes to completion of milestones associated with specific projects
    • Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy 
    • Follows established procedures
    • Works under general supervision
    • Frequent inter- organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters
    • Primarily internal company contacts
    • Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause delays in program schedules and may result in allocation of additional resources
    • Contributes to specific projects milestones
    • Considerable ability to handle complexity but requires more direction
    • Microsoft System Administration experience (MCSA preferred)-Cisco Network Administration experience (CCNA preferred) (or Navy Equivalent)
    • CompTIA Security + certification, required within 6 months of obtaining position
    • Navy Certified Trainer or be knowledgeable in Training standards and processes.
    • Hands on Electrical or Mechanical Engineering experience (or Navy equivalent)
    • Linux, UNIX, and/or Solaris OS experience
    • Ability to travel and support at sea evolutions
