     Bachelor’s degree in a related specialized area or the equivalent experience is required plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience. 


    Candidates must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense SECRET security clearance within a reasonable amount of time from date of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.


     Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required. Selected applicant must successfully complete a drug screen and background check.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Manufacturing Operations Engineering Manager to join us in our Marion, VA location.  The position provides an opportunity to enhance the performance and profitability of an organization that supports some of our nation’s fundamental defense services.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.



    • Manager responsible for Engineering Support to Manufacturing in the execution of programs supporting business objectives for General Dynamics Mission Systems in Marion, Virginia
    • Provides leadership to Manufacturing/Program Engineering teams and adherence to processes and procedures
    • Resolves and supports team in the timely resolution of quality and program technical issues
    • Leader of Manufacturing/Program Engineering Continuous Improvement (Lean Six Sigma, etc.) programs & initiatives
    • Subject matter expert in machining for Marion Operations
    • Responsible to provide substantial support to manufacturing productivity improvement initiatives
    • Collaborates with the Quality and Supplier Management  functions and ensures Quality processes are built into the production processes
    • Establishes and implements production processes and plans to include program start-up, work instructions, routers etc., through the execution of production phase, and program close out
    • Coordinates with Environmental Health and Safety on safety and environmental compliance related initiatives
    • Identifies, analyzes and monitors scope changes to include documenting and communicating any cost, schedule or risk impact
    • Effectively communicates relevant team or project information with Manufacturing Leadership, Program Management, Engineering, Quality and other related teams
    • Generates and monitors budgets, schedules, performance, and staffing requirements from proposal through execution and through program close out
    • Leads teams in resolving manufacturing constraints and related business issues
    • Resolves conflict between individuals and departments
    • Leads employee development and performance management of employees
    • May manage and/or support proposals within business area
    • Regularly assesses performance of team members to established processes and procedures
    • Establishes the review & selection criteria of exempt staff within area of expertise and leads the selection process
    • Contributes to the strategic direction/plan for functional area
    • Regular communication with senior members of internal team, division level management


    • Technical problem solving skills to address engineering, machining, and production issues
    • Strong computer and analytic skills to analyze data and determine the appropriate course of action
    • Strong ability to utilize planning and execution skills to ensure business unit objectives are achieved
    • Substantial experience with CNC machining
    • Strong ability to implement changes and monitor the effectiveness of changes based on cost and schedule impact
    • Strong ability to motivate personnel to develop and implement ideas to resolve business or project related issues
    • Ability to lead team in identification of innovative decisions to continuously improve team or project performance
    • Strong use of influence skills to obtain management level support of initiatives to meet objective of team or project
    • Effectively utilizes verbal and written communication skills to coordinate, collaborate and communicate across multiple functional areas  
    • General understanding of the business environment and how manufacturing supports programs and division/company goals
    • Strong ability to present project progress/results to internal management
    • Understanding of the basic concepts of program schedules, cost performance management, risk areas, slack time, and critical paths
    • Strong drive to relentlessly pursue plans, tasks and initiatives that ensure the business objectives are met in a challenging work environment
    • Effective leadership (influential/inspirational) skills to lead engineering and manufacturing personnel to continually improve processes, products and personnel and business unit performance
