    Bachelor's degree in Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience to meet managerial expectations.



    Department of Defense SECRET Clearance within a resonable amount of time. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) has an immediate opening for a Bloomington based Senior Engineering Manager. The Bloomington business provides high performance computing solutions, storage systems and other products into the airborne market; serving the United States Air Force, Army, Navy and Restricted Customers. The senior manager will be responsible for leading an engineering team that supports the design/development and test of these airborne systems. The position is responsible for managing approximately 100-120 engineers along with their managers and includes our integration and test group, manage engineering labs and factor test equipment.

    The manager will be responsible for program/project execution ensuring cost, schedule, technical requirements are being met and that risks are being appropriate mitigated.


    The manager will work across numerous programs within Air Bourne systems, which will require collaboration with other SEMs, Technical Managers (TM’s), Deputy Program Managers Engineering (DPME’s), Integrated Product Leads (IPT’s), engineers, Business Area leadership, Program Managers, Business Development and customers.


    The manager is responsible to provide the appropriate staffing across all programs, New Business activities including internal research and development and proposal work, as well as strategic initiatives.

    Leverage staff across the MS organization and use COE’s to achieve program objectives. Works in concert with the business to carefully define, attract, hire, retain and align the engineering resources with the business needs

    Provides technical direction and input during the design, development and proposal activities

    Provides leadership and technical/managerial content for proposals with identification of cross business unit strengths and technical shortcomings


    Effectively communicates company objectives, strategies and new information to their engineering team as well as be able to communicate information in a timely and effective manner across levels and positions, both internally and externally


    Supports new business activities, along with pursuits and technology roadmaps. Defines, shapes and manages our technology investment and strategic plans and objectives by working with the business


    Support the monthly Engineering Status Reviews to ensure technical excellence in the execution of programs and to aid in the early identification and resolution of technical problems and risks

    The manager shall also:

    • The manager shall provide clear objectives and expectations. Removes obstacles and empower people to do their job.

    • Ensures process compliance of all engineering activity in areas of responsibility
    • Ensures the appropriate handling of personnel issues within areas of responsibility including merit planning inputs, performance reviews and disciplinary actions
    • Determines and implements the organizational training needs in accordance with the requirements of the technical domain
    • Drives a culture continuous improvement throughout the department
    • Assesses skills of the organization and ensure they align with the forward vision and execution strategy; develops strategies and plans to fill gaps


    • Strong leadership and management skills, especially in Hardware/Systems product development
    • Applies or develops highly advanced technologies, principles, theories and concepts
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills
    • Ability in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
    • Ability to understand and apply project leadership principles including SPI/CPI, Earned Value, Cost Account Management (CAM)
    • Expected to integrate highly complex activities within their discipline and across functional and program boundaries
    • Fully capable of managing work, setting expectations and meeting commitments, and is an excellent team player
    • Travel required up to 25%


    • Electrical / Mechanical or Systems Engineering Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) or equivalent
    • Understanding of the entire hardware design/development life cycle process
    • Previous management experience required
    • Previous experience in a DoD environment preferred
