  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree. Agile experience preferred.


    Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required at time of hire or processing to begin immediately upon acceptance. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Surface Ship Navigation Systems Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.


    Participates in requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis, system design, trade studies, systems integration and test (verification), validation and interface definition studies of system elements direct supervision
    Researches and analyzes data, such as vendor products, COTS components, GFE/CFE/BFE, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
    Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
    Develops and evaluates systems, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable governmental specifications
    Plans sub tasks for activities described above
    Creative, innovative responsibilities requiring advanced decision-making skills
    Defines processes for technical platforms, system specifications, input/output and working parameters for hardware and/or software compatibility
    Developing professional expertise, applies company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
    Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
    Identifies, analyzes and resolves system design weaknesses
    Receives instructions from immediate supervisor
    Contact with multiple work groups
    Works under general supervision
    Contact with Deputy Program Managers Engineering (DPME) and other professionals within the Engineering department
    Contact outside Engineering or with external customers
    Travel may be required (Approximately 20%)

    Security clearance required
    Provides resolution to problems of moderate scope
    Keeps abreast of technology trend

    Familiarity with technical standards
    Very solid knowledge of systems engineering concepts, principles, and theories
    Very solid awareness of business objective and Engineering role in achieving
    Very solid knowledge of requirements management and system modeling tools
    Ability to grasp and apply new information quickly and able to handle more complex assignments
    Shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment and professionally executes projects with little direction
    Very solid proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
    Very solid written and verbal communications skills
    Creative thinker
    Ability to multi-task
    Builds productive internal/external working relationships.
    Very solid skills in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
    Ability to clearly recognize and report relevant to sound systems engineering design


    Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.

    5+ years of experience in a related engineering field is preferred.

    Prior Department of Defense experience

    Prior surface ship experience

    Experience with Navigation Systems

    Experience with Inertial Navigation, Gyrocompasses, GPS, Echo sounders, etc.

    Experience with Certification Requirements (NAVCERT, ECDIS)

    Experience with Internal and External Change Processes

    Experience with Cable Block Diagrams, Wire Connection Lists, and other Drawing Types

    Experience with Requirements Development and Management

    Experience with Problem Report tracking

    Experience with IBM Rational tools such as DOORS and Change

    Very strong technical writing skills

    Very strong presentation skills

    Very strong problem solving skills

    Very strong testing and troubleshooting skills

    High level familiarity with software development lifecycle and experience interfacing with software developers

    High level familiarity with other shipboard systems such as Seaframe Control, Aviation, Infrastructure, etc.
