  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. Applicants with a Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years directly related experience are also eligible.

     

    Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is preferred at time of hire.  Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.  Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required. 

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems is seeking a Marine Operations Technical Manager for our Autonomous Undersea Systems (AUS) line of business which develops and manufactures Bluefin Robotics Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).  We are looking for someone who has strong technical skills and proven leadership experience to work with and build upon our capable Marine Operations team and manage the direction of our AUV offshore operations.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

     

    The Marine Operations Technical Manager is responsible for the marine operations function and associated staff at AUS. Working with the technical managers from Software, Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems Engineering, and other functions in the company, the Marine Operations Technical Manager provides leadership for the definition, deployment and execution of the all offshore operations, processes, and activities at AUS. The Marine Operations Technical Manager is responsible for managing the marine operations team both day-to-day and strategically, staffing projects and proposals, and participating in business development activities including bid and proposal preparation and generation of cost estimates.

     

    The Marine Operations Technical Manager will interface with Program Management, Business Development, Marketing, Customer Service, and the customer as well as provide technical guidance for individual programs and tasks.

     

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Apply health, safety and environmental best practices to continue to foster a climate for making safety the #1 priority in every task
    • Providing technical and operations leadership to and managing Bluefin’s Marine Operations Function
    • Extensive customer interaction with all offshore operations activities and services
    • Developing and deploying processes, technologies, and practices that support the varied needs of Bluefin’s projects
    • Maintaining and implementing safe and robust Marine Operations processes and procedures at Bluefin
    • Attracting and retaining high caliber staff
    • Advancing staff knowledge and abilities in the principles and practices of offshore AUV operations
    • Continually updating the workload forecast to ensure that projects are staffedto meet project demands
    • Serving as a technical resource and subject matter expert for offshore activities
    • Working collaboratively with other functions in the company
    • Assisting in defining, implementing and executing offshore engineering test procedures
    • Working closely with quality to ensure high standards for Bluefin AUVs
    • Ensuring the smooth transition of AUVs from manufacturing to product delivery
    • Managing all aspects of offshore asset needs including working closely with certain vendors whom we rely heavily upon to support us in our offshore testing function
    • Responsible for scheduling and carrying out all maintenance, repairs, inspections and certifications of our offshore vessel, the R/V Resolution, all on-shore support equipment as well as a small fleet of Bluefin owned AUVs
    • Soliciting schedule information from the different programs to properly forecast the offshore needs of the organization and mitigate any conflicts that may arise
    • Support the Customer Service group by providing technical resources to help customers work through issues
    • Travel up to 25%

     

     

    Required Experience and Qualifications:

    • Minimum 8 years of relevant offshore experience
    • Experience managing an engineering group, including staffing, performance appraisals, and project prioritization and task assignment
    • Experience in coordinating offshore operations from start to finish
    • Experience contributing to proposals
    • Experience and technical knowledge of AUV systems, previous operational experience is a plus
    • Experience interacting and managing customers on the front line
    • Ability to communicate technically and effectively with Software, Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems Engineering groups and staff
    • Strong ability to recruit, manage and retain people
    • Experience with negotiating field service agreements with vendors
    • An ability and comfort in working on and managing numerous tasks and projects at one time
