  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.


    Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Chief Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.


    Performs design and development in such areas as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement, and use of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines and/or machines
    Researches and analyzes data, such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
    Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate requirements management, standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
    May supervise or manage lower level employees
    Leads technical tasks for medium to large teams or projects
    Leads medium to large technical projects
    Provides engineering support to manufacturing/operations; leads large technical proposals and contributes to medium to large sized proposals
    Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments
    Guides the successful completion of major programs and projects
    Works on advanced solutions & applications that may result in new business for the company
    Frequent contact with all levels across the entire company
    Serves as consultant to management and customers on projects and applications
    May serve as company technical spokesperson
    Mentors lower labor grades in mechanical principles and project performance
    Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new or special assignments
    Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs
    May supervise or manage lower level employees
    Works on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles
    Carries out other tasks, not listed, assigned by supervisor
    Travel may be required
    Security clearance may be required

    Must have significant proficiency with solid modeling CAD tools to create mechanical models and accompanying drawings

    Significant knowledge with technical standards, manufacturing/fabrication methods, government/industry standards
    Demonstrated history of leading an engineering project and team
    Highly skilled in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
    Significant ability to clearly recognize and report information relevant to sound mechanical engineering design
    Significant understanding of and the ability to apply basic project leadership principles including SPI/CPI, Earned Value, Cost Account Management (CAM), and Statistical Process Controls
    Independently determines approach to solutions
    Recognized internally and/or externally as a subject matter expert (SME) in multiple adjacent disciplines/fields
    Contributes to shaping major market opportunities
    Drives development of innovative technologies


    Additional Responsibilities

    • Provide consultation and guidance for the mechanical engineering and mechanical design directorate’s personnel
    • Participate in regular mechanical design reviews on projects having mechanical content
    • Actively participate in project reviews, where mechanical engineering has significant considerations, to ensure that proper technical approaches and disciplines are being applied.
    • Ensure that design methodologies and practices employed are consistent with General Dynamics’ key initiatives.
    • Serve as an advocate for, and an owner of, the mechanical engineering processes. Take steps to continually upgrade the process and overall mechanical engineering capabilities.
    • Approve the Mechanical Design and Drafting Plan (MDDP) that defines project mechanical engineering activities.
    • Approve the Configuration Management Plan (CMP) that defines project configuration / data management activities.
    • Ensure the projects plan for, and execute, early validation of design requirements/ interfaces/ test execution with the customer/users to improve the probability of success
    • Provide consultation and guidance for the mechanical engineering and mechanical design approaches during all Proposal activities.
    • Actively participate in proposal reviews, where mechanical engineering content is significant to ensure that proper technical approaches and disciplines are being bounded appropriately.
