    A high school diploma or equivalent is required.


    Trade school training and completion of a formal or informal four year apprenticeship in an associated trade such as machining, tool and die making is preferred, plus a minimum of five years of extensive experience in a precision model or prototype shop operations is preferred. In lieu of a degree or apprenticeship, directly related experience that would qualify the incumbent to satisfactorily perform the job duties

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Prototype CNC Machinist/Tool Maker in our Scottsdale, AZ location.



    • Requires experience in CNC mill programming, setup and operation, minimum of 7 years CNC related experience
    • Ability to use computer aided design (CAD) and CNC Programming tools such as CREO, Pro/E and Solid Works, CREO, SolidWorks, MasterCam, GibbsCam, Esprit SolidMill,, SmartCam, EzCam, FeatureCam
    • Ability to work in a fast paced prototype environment, working directly with engineering and designers
    • Familiar with Proto Trak, EZ-TRAK, HAAS, Okuma, Matsura CNC milling machines
    • Tool and Die making experience is a plus
    • Supports concurrent engineering efforts through development of new concepts and techniques in the machining and fabrication of new products with limited supervision
    • Works concurrently with design engineers and manufacturing personnel to come up with creative and rapid design solutions
    • Follows through by implementing solutions for prototypes, demonstrating ingenuity and innovation with machine tools and machining centers
    • Transforms information from prints, written instructions, sketches and oral instructions into finished working mechanisms
    • Sets up and operates all types of precision tool room equipment
    • Uses precision measuring equipment
    • Machines to close tolerances and finish requirements
    • May specialize in precision sheet metal work or machine work
    • Fabricates tools required in the forming of sheet metal parts and assemblies
    • Fabricates all types of sheet metal parts with proficiency
    • Performs all necessary mathematical computations related to the dimensions, tolerances, set-up and speeds and feeds of parts and machines
    • Interprets the extremely complex drawings and diagrams
    • Works well in a customer support role
    • Works well with people including design engineers, manufacturing, materiel and quality to ensure that customer needs are satisfied at all levels

    • Considerable knowledge of machine shop, tool room practices and shop practices
    • Considerable knowledge of the workability of ferrous, non-ferrous metals, plastics and other composite materials and their machining characteristics
    • Ability to work from limited design information or guidance in order to fabricate/machine prototype concept/item
