    Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required or equivalent experience.


    TS/SCI w/Polygraph security clearance is obtainable at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for an Entry-Level Optical Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.  You will also have the ability to work with past leaders in the telecommunications industry (Ciena, Cisco), including our Florham Park, NJ, office, which has its roots in the former Bell Labs.


    The ideal candidate will have a desire to work with systems and components related to the fiber optic telecommunications field.  Prior coursework or work experience with photonic devices and telecommunication test equipment is preferred.  Knowledge of coherent transmission systems is extra credit!




    • Designs, develops, builds and tests systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies
    • Interacts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation
    • May provide recommendations for cost reduction efforts
    • Participates in electrical and optical requirements analysis, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. optical loss, timing, power, etc.), design, integration and verification of electrical and optical components, equipment and systems
    • Applies principles and techniques of Electrical and Optical Engineering
    • Performs optical engineering root cause analysis for electrical issues, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issues
    • Participates in internal optical reviews of optical components, equipment and systems
      Evaluates vendor capability to support product development
    • Applies a basic understanding of the organizationally defined optical processes used throughout the lifecycle of the program or project
    • Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
    • Participates in the selection of components and equipment based on analysis of requirements
    • Generally works within an identified work group
    • Generally has some contact with project leaders
    • Generally works on problems of limited scope under frequent detailed supervision 



    • Working knowledge of electrical and optical engineering concepts, principles, and theories
    • Working knowledge of optical engineering processes
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
    • Working knowledge of optical engineering design tools
    • Good written and verbal communications skills

    • Ability to recognize and clearly report information relevant to sound optical engineering design
    • Ability to work well in a team environment

    PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE: BS Physics, BS Electrical Engineering, BS Optics, or other related disciplines
