  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. Agile experience preferred.

     

    CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
    Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required within a reasonable period of time. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Surface Ship Systems Engineer.  In this role you will work as part of an integrated Command and Control Team on various technical tasks and design efforts for the Littoral Combat Ship Program and Surface Ship Programs; supporting design Investigations and efforts related to the Integrated Combat Management Systems and its associated Weapons and Sensors. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

     

    This opportunity will allow you to join the growing Surface Ship Team in San Diego, CA. You will be working on Navy Ships including the Independence Variant of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF), and potential new Navy Platforms. The core mission system of the Littoral Combat Ship Independence Variant is built on General Dynamics' computing infrastructure. Our computing technology controls everything from ship navigation to firing weapons, and is designed to maximize automation, enabling sailors to focus on their missions. You will be involved with the end-to-end design, production, delivery, and sustainment of the ships and work closely with the customer and sailors as the end user of the product to ensure mission alignment and product quality.     REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

    • Support moderately complex Field Service activities in operating environments at ship yards, training sites, and customer field operations with training, operation or repair.
    • Provide technical skills in area of proficiency and demonstrate ability to troubleshoot technical issues at all types of military and commercial field assignments
    • Determine solutions in resolving a wide variety of technical problems
    • Interface directly with customer personnel to address technical support issues
    • Work at remote locations under general supervision of others
    • Provide regular reporting of progress and status
    • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
    • May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
    • Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings
    • Mentor and coach less experienced engineers
    • Supports technical design, planning, cost and risk analyses, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for subsystems and system elements
    • Participates in detailed technical analyses for a subsystem or system elements
    • May develop system documentation on both new and fielded systems
    • Researches and analyzes data, such as vendor products, COTS components, GFE/CFE, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
    • Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
    • Independently determines proposed approach to solutions
    • Contributes to the completion of major programs and projects
    • Contact with Deputy Program Managers Engineering (DPME) and other professionals within the Engineering department and with project teams across the company
    • Knowledge of systems engineering concepts and modeling tools, principles, and theories
    • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization

    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Proficient use and understanding of systems engineering concepts, principles, and theories
    • Proficient knowledge of other related disciplines
    • Must be willing to travel 60-70%
    • The ability to listen to others and to work well as part of a team
    • Excellent attention to detail, ability to manage own time effectively, produce work of the highest quality, and meet deadlines consistently
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
    • Knowledge of various weapons systems, radars, and sensors relative to combat systems.
    • Ability to multi-task
    • Proficient ability to grasp and apply new information quickly and effectively handle complex assignments 
    • Shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment and professionally executes projects with little direction
    • Proficient ability in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
    • Proficient ability to clearly report relevant to sound systems engineering design
    • Familiarity with technical and Navy standards
    • Keeps abreast of technology trends
    • Knowledge of requirements management

     

    PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering or a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience). Systems Engineering experience preferred.
