  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. Agile experience preferred.

     

    Candidates should have the following:

    • Demonstrated understanding of various SIGINT and GEOINT space system architectures, basic orbital mechanics, and satellite operations
    • Demonstrated experience with space mission management and planning activities
    • Familiarity with satellite mission ground systems including development and functional operation
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interface on a daily basis with the customer and their technical staff
    • Strong writing skills to create system test and evaluation plans and procedures
    • Configuration management of test and team systems engineering artifacts
    • Experience translating system documents and mental models into digital models to create a single source of truth supporting a transition to Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
    • Ability to understand and communicate satellite network data and message flows
    • Ability to elicit requirements from TEMs then document and provide traceability within JIRA or other requirement tracking tools
    • Solid academic grounding and experience with methods and tools applying systems engineering concepts, principles, and theories
    • Ability to document, prioritize, and explain system discrepancies to vendors and customer
    • Ability to prepare an agenda, run, and provide action items for technical meetings then follow up with stakeholders to meet customer deadlines

    CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

    Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI/SSBI) security clearance is required at time of hire.  Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) has an immediate opening for a Space/Satellite Systems Engineer focusing on system of systems interoperability, enterprise level test plan/report/procedure execution, mission CONOPS development, analysis and planning, requirements verification, and model development.  This individual must be adaptable and flexible enough to fit mission needs with an intrinsic ability to engage, learn, and share knowledge.  This position is not daily operations as partner organizations complete the actual day-to-day operations, but a percentage of time may require satellite mission planning and support.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

     

     

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

     

    The Space/Satellite System Engineer will be part of a small team that supports a larger program. This small team through a keen understanding of mission purpose and system capability monitors, analyzes, and alters various overhead sensing platforms as well as associated ground systems and networks. The engineer will analyze system data for anomalous behavior and work to correct such behaviors as well as troubleshoot connectivity issues to maintain data flow. As system capabilities are added or enhanced the engineer will assist the team to understand how best to take advantage of these additional abilities by performing trade studies and relevant analysis. The engineer will also write, communicate, and execute test plans, reports, and procedures that support the verification and validation of ground system requirements and capabilities developed for current or future systems.  The engineer will also assist in the development of future programs by creating day-in-the-life simulations and contributing to overall mission CONOPs.  This individual may also assist maintaining the customer’s SharePoint site, assist with satellite program reviews, and document existing or future architectures in a digital model.

     

    This position is within the customer work environment and requires excellent attention to detail and the ability to act with technical precision and speed. 

     

    ADDITIONAL SKILLS

    • Preference given to candidates with proven Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) skillsets using IBM Rhapsody or Magic Draw with desire to learn more
    • Understands SysML modeling language
    • Basic understanding of Radio Frequency (RF) Engineering
    • Experience working with Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and other Agile software development efforts
    • Proficient written and verbal communications skills
    • Proficient ability to grasp and apply new information quickly and effectively handle complex assignments 
    • Shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment and professionally executes projects with little direction
    • Proficient ability in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
    • Space and satellite operations background is a plus
    • Understanding of satellite design and subsystems is a plus

    DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Typical candidates for the Space/Satellite Systems Engineer position have a Bachelor's degree Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Electrical Engineering or the equivalent and at least three to five years of related work experience.
