    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Radiation Effects Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

     

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

    The Radiation Effects Engineer shall possess understanding of the space radiation environment, energetic charged particle effects on technologies, devices, circuits, and systems; possess knowledge of design techniques for achieving system performance in the space radiation environment and provide leadership in the design and analysis of payload systems as follows:

    • Exercise creative thinking and ideation to advance our business performance
    • Deliver innovative, flexible, integrated solutions to meet customers changing business needs
    • Support and engage in programs, projects and practices behind the GDMS culture and strategy, and comply with all policies and procedures
    • Follow industry and department trends and developments to ensure GDMS services are consistent with, and/or superior to, industry best practices
    • System design for Single Event Effects (SEE) and Mission Integrated Dose (Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Displacement Damage Dose (DDD); including development and flow-down of design requirements, analysis of single event effects on system performance, including ad-hoc functional analysis and assessment of system availability
    • Understanding and analysis of radiation environments; including the natural orbital trapped particle environments (including temporal and spatial variance), the natural Interplanetary environment, transient environments (solar events, coronal mass ejection, space weather, etc), models for energetic particle environments, and transport of radiation environments including, geomagnetic shielding, and analysis of spacecraft shielding (e.g., FastRAD, Space Radiation)
    • Understanding of mission integrated dose effects and design in consideration of total ionizing dose effects (including low dose rate effects), displacement damage dose effects, charging effects (including spacecraft charging effects, dielectric charging effects and the development of design guidelines to mitigate charging effects (e.g., floating metal/conductors)
    • Experience in conduct of testing and characterization of mission integrated dose effects on components; including test standards, guidelines, and methods, identification and experience in use of test facilities for Co-60 ionizing dose testing, neutron and proton displacement damage dose testing, development of test plans and procedures, analysis of test data, and publication of test reports
    • Development of component application derating guidelines and auditing of circuit worst-case analyses ensuring payload survivability over mission integrated dose
    • Experience in conduct of heavy ion and proton single event effects testing; including test standards, guidelines, and methods, identification and experience in use of test facilities, development of test plans and procedures, analysis of test data, and publication of test reports
    • Complete knowledge of single event effects, application mitigation provisions, and analysis of occurrence rates for Destructive Single Event Effects (DSEE) (Single Event Latchup (SEL) and Snapback (SES), Single Event Dielectric Rupture (SEDR), Single Event Gate Rupture (SEGR) and Single Event Burnout (SEB), Single Event Transient (SET) generation and circuit response, Single Event Upset (SEU), Multiple Bit Upset (MBU), and Single Event Functional Interrupt (SEFI)
    • Development of component application de-rating guidelines and auditing of circuit worst-case analyses ensuring payload immunity to destructive single event effects
    • Analysis of SEU, MBU, and SEFI occurrence rates and leadership in analyses to establish outcomes at the component, subsystem, and system level; analysis of impacts to system availability resulting from single event effects
    • Key Radiation Effects resource in the identification, implementation, analysis, and verification of fault tolerance strategies, techniques, and methods across the hardware, software, and system disciplines
    • Represent General Dynamics Mission Systems in prime contractor and sponsor radiation effects working groups, and DOD / industry functions associated with radiation effects
    • Knowledge of effects and design provisions addressing nuclear weapon effects, specifically, short and long pulse dose rate (gamma and x-ray), neutron fluence, and electromagnetic pulse (internal and system generated)
    • Knowledge of effects and design provisions addressing neutron single event effects is desirable

    • Ability to recognize and clearly report information relevant to sound electrical engineering design
    • Travel may be required.

      PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor's degree in Systems, Computer, or Electrical Engineering, or a similar technical field or the equivalent and at least ten years of related work experience. Applicants with a Master's degree and a minimum of eight years of related experience are also eligible.
