Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required within a reasonable period of time. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

From writing new or enhancing existing technical product guides, as our Advanced Technical Writing Specialist, your talent will be front and center. You’ll create, develop, plan, write and edit complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication. We’ll depend on you to act as the primary technical editor on client deliverables. You’ll implement editorial and document governance standards for quality and style; ensure all assigned deliverables meet these standards.

The Senior Technical Writing Specialist is responsible for creating, planning, writing and editing complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures. This will entail documenting engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff’s notes and procedures and applying formatting in order to support the writing and publication of hardware and software test procedures. Additionally, you’ll work in a team environment with other writers, providing feedback and critiquing work in order to help develop leadership skills, documentation skills and expertise with production tools and projects.

 

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops operational procedural and maintenance manuals in accordance with MIL-STD-3001, MIL-STD-38784, MIL-STD-24784, and MIL-STD 40051-2C.
  • Knowledge of S1000D compliant Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) development processes and sustainment element planning strategies, with experience working in an Agile environment
  • Collaborates with SMEs, developers and engineers to gather technical details, ensuring documentation meets operational and end-user requirements.
  • Interpret engineering data, technical drawings, Bill Of Materials (BOMs) and system specifications to develop user-friendly documentation.
  • Support documentation efforts through the full lifecycle of a Navy system or program.
  • Maintain established technical documentation lifecycle, to include review cycles and hardware and/or software update cycles.
  • Create supporting graphics (e.g., functional block diagrams) in various formats (e.g., .JPEG, .PNG, etc.) to support electronic technical manuals.
  • Collaborates with the development team to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality results.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

 

  • Ability to research unfamiliar technology well enough to describe and summarize for an end-user; must be comfortable asking questions and collaborating with SMEs.
  • Write and edit technical documentation in various formats (e.g., .doc, .PDF, HTML, and XML/SGML-tagged IETMs).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.

 

OPTIONAL/PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

 

  • Experience using an XML editor (e.g., XMLSpy, Arbortext).
  • Understanding of the application and usage of S1000D Applicability.
  • Basic understanding of JIRA and Confluence
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design principles.
  • Understanding of a repository-based content management system (e.g., TortoiseSVN).

This estimate represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors (geographic location, etc.). Actual pay may vary. This job posting will remain open until the position is filled.

Combined Salary Range

USD $89,221.00 - USD $96,540.00 /Yr.
