ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:
As a Lead Electrical Engineer for the Standard Test System team at GD-MS, you will head the hardware design effort. You will spearhead the design and development of our next-generation common test platform. In this pivotal role, you will act as the hardware authority, replacing "one-off" test fixtures toward a unified, modular architecture. You will lead the full hardware lifecycle, from multi-product requirement gathering to test system deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- System Architecture Design: Lead the conceptualization, definition, and design of comprehensive hardware test architectures that meet product requirements and ensure maximum test coverage and efficiency.
- Test Strategy & Definition: Define clear test regimes, plans, and specifications (including entry/exit criteria, coverage metrics, and pass/fail limits) for prototypes through high-rate production.
- Equipment Integration: Select, configure, and automate a wide range of RF and digital test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers (VNAs), signal generators, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and PXI systems.
- Interconnect & Cabling: Design, specify, and manage complex mass interconnect systems and high-frequency RF/digital cabling, ensuring signal integrity, performance (low insertion loss, controlled impedance), and long-term reliability in a high-mating-cycle test environment. Design cable interconnects and Printed Wiring Boards.
- Design for Test (DFT): Collaborate with product design engineers to influence hardware designs for optimal testability, incorporating features that facilitate efficient testing methods like In-Circuit test and JTAG/Boundary Scan.
- Fixture Development: Oversee the development and integration of custom test fixtures, including mechanical and electrical interfaces, to ensure robust and repeatable connections to the Unit Under Test (UUT).
- Documentation & Standards: Generate and maintain thorough technical documentation, including system block diagrams, schematics, specifications, and operational procedures, ensuring compliance with industry and regulatory standards.
- Technical Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to test engineers and technical support staff, leading projects and ensuring alignment across cross-functional teams (design, manufacturing, quality, software).
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: 5-10 years of experience in hardware design, test engineering, or system architecture, preferably within a relevant industry (e.g., aerospace, defense, telecommunications, consumer electronics).
- Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to perform complex root cause analysis and implement effective solutions.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
- RF Expertise: Strong background in RF system design and verification, including link budget analysis, receiver/transmitter architectures, and proficiency with RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, VNAs, signal generators).
- Digital Expertise: Knowledge of digital hardware design, high-speed interfaces, and proficiency with digital test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
- Test Systems: Hands-on experience with PXI systems and the ability to automate measurements using modular and bench test equipment.
- Interconnects: Proven experience in designing or specifying mass interconnect solutions and managing complex cable/harness designs.
- JTAG: Expertise in using and implementing JTAG/Boundary Scan for board-level testing and in-system programming/debugging.
