Job Summary:
The PCS Systems/Test Engineer will be responsible for requirements development, verification planning, and test execution for the Payload Control System (PCS), a critical component of the AN/BYG-1 submarine combat system. This role integrates systems engineering and test engineering disciplines: the engineer will author and maintain requirements in IBM DOORS, develop and execute verification events, perform design reviews, and maintain traceability from stakeholder needs through system requirements to test results. The position supports the full systems engineering lifecycle from requirements analysis through formal qualification testing.
Requirements Engineering
- Author, review, and maintain system and subsystem requirements in IBM DOORS, ensuring each requirement is necessary, unambiguous, singular, and verifiable
- Maintain bidirectional traceability: stakeholder needs to system requirements, system requirements to subsystem requirements, requirements to design elements, and requirements to verification methods
- Participate in requirements change management, including impact analysis for Technical Insertions (TIs) and Authorized Product Baselines (APBs)
- Identify and disposition requirement defects: orphan requirements, untraceable requirements, ambiguous language, compound requirements, and TBD/TBR resolution tracking
Verification and Test Engineering
- Develop, implement, and execute test plans, test procedures, and test cases for PCS to ensure compliance with allocated requirements
- Design and execute functional, integration, regression, and performance tests for hardware and software components
- Assign and justify verification methods (Test, Demonstration, Analysis, Inspection) for each requirement and maintain the Verification Cross Reference Matrix (VCRM)
- Perform system troubleshooting, debugging, and root cause analysis to identify and resolve defects
- Develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks to improve test efficiency and coverage
- Document test results, track defects in JIRA, generate test reports, and communicate findings to stakeholders
Systems Engineering Support
- Participate in formal technical reviews and prepare review artifacts
- Support development and review of technical documentation conforming to applicable Data Item Descriptions (DIDs)
- Coordinate interface definitions with external systems and subsystems, ensuring completeness of data types, ranges, units, protocols, and timing
- Support integration and validation activities as required
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software developers, systems engineers, and program management, to ensure comprehensive test coverage and effective defect resolution
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Technology degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience, plus 2 years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree
- Demonstrated experience in systems engineering, software/system testing, or verification and validation, preferably within defense or aerospace programs
- Working knowledge of requirements engineering principles: writing well-formed requirements, maintaining traceability, and conducting requirements reviews
- Familiarity with IBM DOORS or equivalent requirements management tools
- Familiarity with defect and work tracking tools (e.g., JIRA)
- Strong understanding of test methodologies, test design techniques, and quality assurance practices
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written communication and technical documentation skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
Desired Skills:
- Experience with submarine combat systems
- Knowledge of MIL-STD-498, IEEE/EIA 12207, or equivalent software development and documentation standards
- Familiarity with government Data Item Descriptions (DIDs) and CDRL deliverables
- Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell)
- Experience with systems engineering lifecycle processes per ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288
- Knowledge of Navy maintenance procedures and philosophies, especially for combat systems
- Experience with advanced defense systems and combat system testing
- Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering
What sets you apart:
- Former U.S. Navy experience on Virginia, Seawolf, Ohio, or 688-class submarines
- Prior experience working with BYG-1, SWFTS, CIS, CCE, or other submarine combat system components
- Any hands-on experience with submarine weapons, sensors, or payload systems
- Experience conducting or participating in formal technical reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR)
- Creative thinking with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
- Commitment to ongoing professional development
- Team player who thrives in collaborative environments
- Identifies opportunities to apply AI tools for continuous improvement and engineering efficiency
