ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:
General Dynamics Mission Systems is seeking an Advanced Systems Engineer 2 to support the D5LE2 program within the SWC Fire Control engineering organization. The successful candidate will apply systems engineering fundamentals across the full system life cycle, leveraging Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and digital engineering concepts to deliver mission-critical solutions in support of the U.S. Navy's strategic deterrent. This role requires strong critical thinking skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a complex, long-horizon program environment. Candidate must be able to travel to the Pittsfield, MA office once every 3 weeks.

Key Responsibilities:
- Apply system fundamentals and system life cycle principles to perform requirements analysis, definition, and management, functional analysis, performance analysis, system design, trade studies, integration and test (verification),validation, and interface definition for D5LE2 subsystems and system elements
- Utilize MBSE and digital engineering concepts and tools to develop, maintain, and communicate system architectures, models, and designs in support of upcoming D5LE2 program milestones (PDR 2028, CDR 2032)
- Apply critical thinking to identify, analyze, and resolve system design weaknesses and support sound engineering decision-making across a complex, long-duration program
- Perform technical planning, cost and risk analyses, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for subsystems and system elements
- Develop and allocate system requirements to lower-level elements and components; support customer requirements analysis in alignment with D5LE2 program objectives
- Conduct detailed technical analyses and research vendor products, COTS components, GFE/CFE, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
- Design complete and complex frameworks, systems, or products
- Support Modeling and Simulation activities in alignment with program objectives
- Generate technical engineering products using appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the D5LE2 system development life cycle
- Evaluate systems and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable governmental security specifications; may support system accreditation/certification and develop system security documentation
- Plan and execute project tasks, contribute to major program milestones, and support the achievement of D5LE2 business objectives
- Identify opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation
- May provide leadership and/or direction to lower-level employees
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Fully proficient understanding and application of systems engineering principles, concepts, and theories in a complex, safety-critical program environment such as D5LE2
- Fully proficient knowledge of the system development life cycle, from concept through disposal, with experience supporting all phases on a major defense or strategic weapons program
- Fully proficient with system modeling tools (Cameo/MagicDraw, DOORS, or equivalent) and recognized architectural patterns; experience applying MBSE methodologies to real program deliverables
- Familiarity with digital engineering concepts and their application to program workflows, model management, and authoritative sources of truth
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, and independently determine and execute sound solutions with limited direction
- Fully proficient in requirements management tools and Microsoft Office applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly report findings and recommendations aligned with sound systems engineering design principles
- Ability to sell concepts and ideas to internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to multi-task and quickly grasp and apply new information on complex assignments
- Shows initiative, exercises independent judgment, and professionally executes projects
D5LE2 Program Context:
- D5LE2 is the next-generation life extension of the Trident II D5 strategic weapons system, supporting the U.S. Navy's sea-based nuclear deterrent through the 2080s
- Key milestones: Preliminary Design Review (PDR) 2028, Critical Design Review (CDR) 2032
- Engineering team applies MBSE, digital engineering, and rigorous systems engineering processes in a safety-critical, CNWDI-controlled environment
