Responsibilities for this Position

ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:

As a Deputy Systems Lead for the Strategic Weapon Interface Simulator (SWIS), you will partner with the Lead Systems Engineer to coordinate the day-to-day systems engineering execution of a complex system supporting the future Columbia-class submarine fleet.

SWIS brings together the simulation capabilities needed to support both Fire Control system development and fleet training. It allows engineering teams to develop, integrate, and test Fire Control capabilities in lab environments and helps prepare the fleet to operate those capabilities before they are used aboard a submarine.

In this role, you will help maintain an integrated technical approach across requirements, architecture, system design, interfaces, hardware, software, infrastructure, cyber, integration, verification, and test. You will lead selected technical workstreams, organize cross-functional engineering activities, review technical work products, facilitate decisions, and ensure technical risks, issues, dependencies, and corrective actions are clearly understood and driven to closure.

You will serve as a trusted delegate for day-to-day technical coordination and help provide the Lead Systems Engineer with clear status, options, and recommendations. You will translate program priorities into executable engineering plans, establish ownership and follow-through across the team, and provide technical inputs to schedules, estimates, earned value management, and program reviews.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will work with SWIS systems in lab environments, support integration and test activities, investigate unexpected system behavior, coordinate root-cause analysis, and help the team turn complex technical problems into practical, testable solutions. You will also mentor engineers, strengthen engineering rigor, and help position the broader team for success.

We encourage you to apply if you have any of these preferred skills or experiences:

- Experience performing systems engineering across the development life cycle, including requirements analysis, system design, interface definition, integration, verification, and validation.
- Experience coordinating technical work across software, hardware, infrastructure, cyber, test, or other engineering disciplines.
- Experience leading technical teams or workstreams, setting priorities, reviewing work products, and driving issues and actions to closure.
- Experience with requirements management and traceability using IBM DOORS or similar tools.
- Experience developing test procedures, leading test execution, analyzing system performance, commissioning integrated systems, or troubleshooting complex system behavior.
- Experience with technical planning, project execution, risk management, schedule development, earned value management systems, or cost and schedule performance.
- Experience communicating technical status, risks, decisions, and recommendations to program leadership, customers, and engineering stakeholders.
- Experience with defense systems, Fleet Ballistic Missile or Fire Control programs, simulation systems, training systems, or other mission-critical integrated systems.
- Experience with Linux, networking, virtual machines, lab infrastructure, cyber hardening, or secure system configuration.

What sets you apart:

- Proficient understanding and application of systems engineering principles, concepts, theories, and technical standards.
- Demonstrated success turning complex technical objectives into organized, executable work across a cross-functional team.
- Sound technical judgment and the ability to identify when to make progress, when to seek additional data, and when to elevate a decision or risk.
- Collaborative leadership style that creates clarity, holds owners accountable, mentors engineers, and positions others for success.
- Ability to balance hands-on technical problem-solving with planning, coordination, and communication responsibilities.
- Strong written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to negotiate practical solutions to challenging customer and program needs.
- Awareness of business objectives and the ability to connect engineering decisions to technical, cost, schedule, and delivery outcomes.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development for yourself and others.
- Identifies opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation.
